Paulo Freire method is used to integrate refugees in Germany

Criticized by the Bolsonaro government, a Brazilian educator is respected in universities, gives his name to the institute and inspires projects in the European country, such as language teaching for immigrants taking into account their reality.

The target of criticism from President Jair Bolsonaro, his children, Olavo de Carvalho and Education Minister Abraham Weintraub, in addition to other members of the government, the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire still inspires European researchers and his legacy is preserved in Germany, 22 years after his death.

With headquarters in Berlin, the Paulo Freire Institute and the Paulo Freire Society maintain educational projects in Germany and in Latin American countries, guided by the ideals of Brazilians that education is a political, humanizing and social change act.

Also spreading Freire’s legacy, Cooperação Paulo Freire, in northern Germany, defines itself as an international association of people guided by Freire’s ideas and who want to follow the path of a society oriented towards dialogue.

In Germany, the Paulo Freire method is also currently used to integrate refugees into the country, to guide people who work with Alzheimer’s patients and has served as an inspiration for a learning model used in kindergartens.

There is also a primary school in the city of Parchim and a vocational school in Berlin, named after the Brazilian educator. And last November, the Paulo Freire Congress brought together researchers at the University of Hamburg.

“Paulo Freire’s influence in Germany is very great. He is seen as one of the great names in pedagogy, alongside Immanuel Kant, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Rudolf Steiner and Maria Montessori. Even today his books are widely used in universities , there are countless university works that use his works “, says Professor Heinz-Peter Gerhardt, PhD in Education from the University of Frankfurt and visiting professor at the Catholic University of Macao, in China.

“Even here in China, Paulo Freire is talked about. They are interested in knowing who this Brazilian is who mentioned Mao Zedong in his books”, says Gerhardt.

The professor lived with the Brazilian in São Paulo and Geneva and was able to check his teachings up close. Still in college, in the early 1970s – in the midst of a generation motivated by the idea that the change would not come from the big cities, but from the peripheries -, Gerhardt wrote his final work on Paulo Freire. As a result of this research, he received a scholarship from the University of Frankfurt and embarked for Brazil, where he spent four years studying the work and method of the Brazilian.

“I was in Angicos, in Rio Grande do Norte, where he applied, in the 1960s, for the first time his method of literacy”, says the professor.

In the midst of the military dictatorship, Gerhardt says that, as a foreigner, he had more freedom to research Freire than the Brazilians themselves. He ended up being invited by Unesco to write the chapter about Paulo Freire in the entity’s encyclopedia, which has been translated into several languages and is still available for consultation today.

Paulo Freire in practice

Gerhardt points out that, in addition to respect and academic relevance, the views of the Brazilian educator are now applied in practice in Germany. “Currently, there are attempts to use Paulo Freire’s methods especially in teaching the German language to refugees”, he says.

“It is based on the assumption that everyone has already been to a school, ‘the school of life’, as Freire stated. So, the best way is to check what these people already know and start from that point, using words that they have already know, but don’t know the concept “, he explains.

According to Gerhardt, the idea is to investigate the context in which the refugee lives, so that he needs to use the language. “Is it to solve bureaucracies? To find a job? When teaching simplified, more practical German, people feel motivated to learn more and to evolve”, he explains.

In Berlin, the Paulo Freire Institute has used, since 2012, the methodology of the Brazilian educator in a project for the integration and teaching of the German language to immigrants in the Moabit neighborhood. The program is financed with resources from the German government.

Once a week, during classes, eight to 12 year old children from two schools carry out activities during which they can talk about their experiences and feelings.

“In the day-to-day of the classroom, the teacher is concerned with passing on the formal contents. However, in this weekly meeting, multidisciplinary activities are proposed, when each student can talk about his experience, what life was like in his native country, how it is life is here and there is an exchange of ideas, of teaching. Immigrants feel welcomed, and German children come to better understand the reality of their colleagues “, says Gladys Ayllón, PhD in Education from the Free University of Berlin, professor at the University Catholic in Peru and member of the Paulo Freire Institute since 2014.

Ayllón explains that it is not just about learning the German language, but understanding society and learning to be critical and that another fundamental part of the project is the students’ families.

“In three months, the children are already speaking German. With their parents, learning is slower. Families need to feel welcomed, understand how the German system works,” he explains.

Every 15 days, meetings are held so that parents can also share their feelings and desires. “Only when they feel comfortable will the real integration take place,” says Ayllón.

The third front of the project is centered on teachers, who undergo training to learn tools to conduct these meetings.

Another example of the use of Freire’s methods in Germany today is in communication with people with Alzheimer’s. Often, those who care for patients with the disease have many frustrations, as they do not see any progress in the situation.

“Today, some training institutes already teach these professionals to see the situation from the patient’s reality. If he communicates by looking, one should try to correspond to that, react to that. Not having so many theories, but focusing on the practice , the communication between professional and patient “, comments Gerhardt.

The use of Freire’s ideas in practical German life is nothing new. In the early 1990s, after the reunification of the country, kindergartens in the regions of Berlin and former East Germany used the line of thinking Situationsansatz , by Jürgen Zimmer, who was also inspired by Freire. In the pedagogical concept, key situations in the student’s life are addressed and transformed into a learning object.

“The method was used to reintegrate the children, mainly those from the former East Germany, where education for the socialist personality had reigned before. It was realized that it was necessary to observe more the context from which they came, the study of their reality to learn how to teach them “, points out Gerhardt.

Paulo Freire in Latin America

In addition to training and programs in Latin America, for about ten years, the Paulo Freire Institute in Berlin has also received interns from different Latin American countries, who sometimes do not know the Brazilian educator or know him superficially.

In July, for example, a group of 30 Chilean teachers, funded by the Chilean Ministry of Education, will spend a month in Berlin to study integration and visit some kindergartens where Situationsansatz is employed.

“What is sought is a critical pedagogy, so that the student can understand the context in which he lives and question it”, says Ayllón.

For the researcher, the Latin American dictatorships of the last century made Freire more known in Europe than in the continent itself.

“Critical thinking was not allowed, which was exactly what Paulo Freire always preached”, he says.

Despite the recognition in other countries, Gerhardt points out that, unfortunately, Paulo Freire’s method was never really used in Brazil.

“He was implanting his ideas [under the government of João Goulart], but then the military dictatorship began, he was accused of being subversive, he was arrested and then exiled, and the National Literacy Program, of course, was interrupted. Not even when he was Secretary of Education for the Municipality of São Paulo (1989-1992), under Luiza Erundina, did he manage to implement his method. He did his best with what was available “, comments Gerhardt.
